Film description
Comedy, drama, musical, gangster film, social drama, soap opera, and a lyric poem, all in one.
A body of a scruffy middle-aged woman is found by the river. Her nephew, who did not know she existed, is slowly unfolding the story of a beautiful, joyful Matsuko, driven to the edge by her uncompromising faith in love. The accounts of the people he meets during the investigation come together to form a story of rises and falls (with more of the latter), and of dreams crushed by brutal reality. A picture of an extraordinary woman, with an extremely difficult life.
It is shown with flashing colors, disarming choreography, and an epic scale. "Citizen Kane" in color, "The Life of Oharu" with a twist of psychedelic music. A spectacle of different conventions, an aesthetic carousel with an acute social critique in the background.
But Nakashima does not play with trinkets just for the fun of it - he uses them to reverse proportions and interpretation of events. The different and the marginalized become the center of interest. The unhappy life of failures is shown in a way reserved for the stories of the most spectacular successes.
