HBO's Folkore

16 Nov 2018, Muranów

About the event

HBO's "Folklore" is break-through horror anthology, which brings together six outstanding Asian film directors - Indonesia's Joko Anwar, Malaysia's Ho Yuhang, Singpore's Eric Khoo, Thailand's Pen-ek Ratanaruang, Japan's Takumi Saitoh, South Korea's Lee Sang-woo - to tell haunting tales originated in East and Southeast Asian folk tales.

The project, initiated by Eric Khoo, one of the most important figures in the contemporary Singapore cinema, reinvents six distinct narratives which have lingered on through generations of regional superstitions across Asia. The monstrous apparitions include, among others, ravenous ghost in Thailand, and a shaman-controlled child spirit in Malaysia. "Folklore" provides an in-depth insight into the occult and the supernatural in the traditions of East and Southeast Asia. Six directors breathe new life into classic Asian ghost stories, expanding the widely known canon of horror tales, monstrous creatures and restless ghosts. The filmmakers also draw inspiration from contemporary social phenomena occurring in their home countries, and the history of horror genre in the cinema and television, remaining in dialogue with the present and the past.

The program of the HBO's Folklor evening at 12th Five Flavours includes two episodes of the series:

22:00 Toyol, dir. Ho Yuhang
22:55 Pob, dir. Pen-ek Ratanaruang
