Film description
The Chinese Navy’s Assault Team is famed for its skills and effectiveness. After its success in rescuing a cargo ship hijacked by pirates off the Somalia coast, the special squad is assigned an even more dangerous mission. A coup d'etat in a North African republic has left local Chinese residents in danger, circumstances further complicated by a terrorist plot to obtain nuclear materials. The situation could prove fatal to the hostages as well as disastrous to the entire region and presents the team with a challenge that threatens the lives of its members.
"Operation Red Sea" proves that 1980s American action cinema formula has it's true revival in Chinese big-budget films, which turn out to be a huge box office hits. Director Dante Lam is using his long-years experience gained while working within well-developed and highly commercialized Hong Kong cinema. He skillfully employs the rules of genre cinema and backed with the generous funds from the Chinese film industry investors, he creates a visually dazzling cliffhanger, which undermines the American dominance within mainstream culture.

Dante Lam
Born in 1964 in Hong Kong, during his teenage years he was sent to Kaohsiung, Taiwan to live with his distant family, because he started to hang out with suspicious people and gangsters instead of going to school. When it turned out the move did not help, Dante Lam was brought back to Hong Kong. In 1984, while still in school, he started his career in the local film industry, doing odd jobs in Cinema City & Co. production company alongside Wilson Yip. After graduating from high school, Dante Lam worked behind-the-scenes at the production of the 1988 star-studded Lunar New Year film "Eighth Happiness". Meanwhile to make ends meet he worked in advertising, but his interest in filmmaking grew stronger. Dante Lam's directorial debut, "Option Zero" was well-received but the turning point in his career was meeting Gordon Lam. In 1998, the two of them directed "Beast Cops", which won five awards at Hong Kong Film Awards including Best Director. Since then Dante Lam specializes in action cinema and sports dramas, his latest film "Operation Red Sea" was a huge box office hit in China and ninth highest grossing film of 2018.
