Monk of the Sea
Awards and festivals
Film description
Ball is 30 years old, he lives with his parents, works day and night, likes to party, and enjoys other consumerist pleasures of city life. Yet, he decides to follow the Thai tradition and spend some time as a monk. He reports to a monastery in the beautiful countryside, managed by a charismatic leader with an intriguing past.
The Thai custom writes this spiritual training into the definition of a "real man." That is why, at some point in life, 70% of the male population become monks for a few days or a few months. The clash of monastery life and contemporary reality is increasingly striking. The director follows the protagonist's struggle with limiting the stimuli and entering the path of asceticism. It is not only an insight into the problems of the Thai society, but also a universal portrait of contemporary 30 year olds struggling with the challenges of modernity.
Finishing the documentary was possible partly thanks to crowdfunding. In the pre-production period, the filmmakers benefited from the assistance of their Thai colleagues, including Anocha Suwichakornpong (her films were shown at the 4th Five Flavours).
