In "A Simple Life" dying is silent. Not complaining about the hardships of the past, not looking for someone to blame. The departure is arduous, filled with the pain of rejection and the sorrow of loneliness.
The main character, Ah Tao, dies so discretely, that her passing almost recedes to the background of the story. It belongs to the sphere of understatements, of the palpable, irrevocably approaching future, and remains something not to be talked about loud. The director shows it as a prolonged moment in which reality no longer needs the woman, no longer has a place for her - puts her aside, and sets her aside to live her final days in peace, out of sight. The protagonist's simple struggle for dignity, made up with small, every-day troubles, is portrayed as something more important than any other fight in her life.
