Film description

Does it make sense to shoot an almost scene-to-scene remake of one of the most award-winning, iconic Hollywood films of the 90s? The Japanese "Unforgiven," shot two decades after the premiere of the original, proves that it really does. It is not a copy of Eastwood's film but the author's valuable commentary on the close relationship between the Westerns and Samurai cinema. Eastwood was inspired by Kurosawa's "Yojimbo" – Sang-il takes the plot back to Japan and writes it into the country's history. Great performances, the pervasive melancholy, and the beautiful shots entitle Lee Sang-il's film to be perceived as an entirely autonomous work.
