Film description
Oom, an undocumented Thai migrant, lives in a remote mountainous area of Taiwan with limited access to medical care. He works for Hsing, an agent who recruits Southeast Asian migrants for caregiving roles in households with elderly or disabled family members. Through his work, Oom witnesses the struggles of his fellow workers and develops compassion as a caregiver for Mei, an elderly woman, and her disabled son, Hui, which forces him to confront difficult moral choices that test the limits of his ethics as a human being.
In "Mongrel', Wei Liang Chiang weaves together his experiences as a migrant in Taiwan and his background in caretaking to narrate the lives of individuals on the fringes of already marginalized communities, including immigrants, disabled people, and those living in poverty. With a rich anthropological perspective, "Mongrel" offers a raw and intimate perspective on the complexities of human nature, delving into the darker shades of existence where the definition of humanity becomes blurred, evoking reflection on the profound question of what it truly means to be human.
