Film description
Tenzin is a young, ambitious man with a dream – he wants to open the best coffee house in Kathmandu. The only thing stopping him is a returning nightmare he cannot shake off, even though he is a man of serious, rational convictions. Reluctantly, he seeks the help of a monk who gives him an enigmatic task of finding and asking for help a dakini – an enlightened woman who can stop the dark prophecy from the dream from coming true.
A surprising film, combining a portrait of modern Nepal with the wisdom of Buddhist tales is the newest production by Khyentse Norbu, a Bhutanese director and lama famous in the international festival circles for "The Cup," "Travelers and Magicians," or "Hema Hema." In his films, the master of Himalayan cinema explores the mythology of Bhutan, Nepal and Tibet, without losing sight of the modern challenges faced by the people in the region. This time, Khyentse Norbu focuses his attention on the dakinis, enlightened women, and their energy, the energy of transformation.
The unique journey of the skeptical protagonist confronting the sacrum is also a fascinating journey through Himalayan landscapes, masterly shot by cinematographer Mark Lee Ping-bing, a regular collaborator of Hou Hsiao-hsien, whom Five Flavours audiences remember from the hypnotic "Crosscurrent," "The Assassin," or "Millenium Mambo."
