Film description

Migiwa is a pearl diver. Together with her newlywed husband, they form a harmonious tandem. They both become accidentally enmeshed in a sinister plot of developers planning to modernize the coast and build a nuclear power plant. Only the wife will survive the following clash. Armed with a harpoon, she vows to avenge her beloved, armed with the forces of nature.

"Mermaid Legend" is a forgotten classic that returns in a renovated copy four decades after its premiere. It is an explosion of creativity befitting its time - one of the last works of the legendary Art Theatre Guild studio, made in a unique aesthetic, with a distinctive sound design and elements of exploitation cinema, in which eroticism goes hand in hand with drastic violence straight from a Yakuza movie. The film is a spectacle that stimulates the senses – from the beautiful sequences of pearl fishing, all the way to the bloody finale. The screenings of “Mermaid Legend” will be a special event in this year’s program.
