Film description
The spirit of the beautiful Fleur appears in contemporary Hong Kong to find Chen-pang, her beloved from five decades before. She was once a courtesan in a popular teahouse, he – her client, and a member of a privileged, affluent family. Their happiness together was threatened by social conventions, so the lovers decided to commit suicide together, overdosing on opium to spend eternity by each other's side. But Chen-pang disappeared without a trace. Can Fleur find him in a space that has changed so much within half a century?
This allegorical story about a love that transcends time, with the ever-changing Hong Kong as its third protagonist, is Kwan's greatest artistic success. The director used an original approach to generic conventions, enhancing the power of the story with the masterful set design that preceded Wong Kar Wai's achievements by a decade. The film marks the only time the legends of Hong Kong pop culture – Anita Mui and Leslie Cheung – appeared on the screen together. They both died in 2003.
