Film description

In December 1999, a brutal conflict broke out between the Muslim and Christian communities at the Maluku Islands in East Indonesia. Neighbors, previously living in harmony, resorted to weapons and bloody violence. The fights, which went on for years, brought many victims and caused hundreds of thousands of people to lose the roofs over their heads.

Taxi driver Sani finds himself in the middle of these events, watching with horror as children from his own village are being killed. To help save them, he decides to set up a football team, putting more and more of his time and energy into the training. The plan seems to be working, as evidenced by an invitation to compete in the national championships. Will the youth from both sides of the barricade be able to put their animosities aside, become a team, and fight for one common goal?

Based on true events, "We Are Moluccans" is an inspiring story about the unique power of sports and the desire for community, among both the players and the fans, which can overcome even the most difficult of hardships. This wise, moving film is also an emotional spectacle with brilliantly directed sport sequences, in which the stakes grow higher with every game.
