Film description
Taoist master Gau agrees to oversee the reburial of the long-deceased father of the wealthy Mr Yam. Upon opening the coffin, however, they discover that the body has not decomposed, a bad omen, as it may reanimate at any moment as a jiangshi, a hopping vampire. Together with his clumsy apprentices, Master Gau must find a way to stop this lively undead menace.
Lavishly produced and bursting with colour, “Mr Vampire” was made under the initiative of Sammo Hung, one of the most important figures in Hong Kong martial arts cinema, and launched the subgenre of kung fu comedies featuring hopping vampires, which became immensely popular for a time. Today, the film is a legend, a vivid reminder of how inventive and diverse Hong Kong cinema was at the height of its creative powers. Seen now in its restored version, “Mr Vampire” remains irresistibly funny and dazzlingly choreographed, a joyous classic of action and imagination.
