Film description
7-year-old Yuen and her mother leave Hunan for Hong Kong in 1997. Yuen’s father, a thief and a drug-addict, is already there. The girl is having difficulty finding her way in a new, unfriendly place – she doesn’t know the language and has problems communicating, which is why her friends at school treat her badly. A while later, Yuen’s younger sister, Kuet, joins the family in their cramped apartment. It would seem that, once they are together, the family will find peace, but the criminal doings of the father have a constant, destructive effect on the family. The sisters’ adolescence is not without its problems. Will they find their own paths without losing touch with each other? In her impressively mature full-length debut, Sasha Chuk adapted her own, partly autobiographical novel to take a careful, delicate and understanding look at the fate of an immigrant family over the course of over twenty years.
