Film description
Tokyo, the 1990s. A group of high school girls works in the commercial district of Shibuya, arranging the so-called enjo kōsai, paid dates with middle-aged men. From karaoke to getting lunch together – what started off as innocent transactions takes on an increasingly disturbing form. One of the girls dreams of getting an expensive ring, but she only has a few hours to collect the money for it. Before the next day dawns, she will be a different person.
Hideaki Anno, author of the "Neon Genesis Evangelion" series, shows Shibuya as a place full of intruders and fetishists, the lonely and excluded who often seek a substitute of contact in violence. The film seems to come as an aftermath of the 1990s, the decade of crisis when, in addition to the economic collapse, the residents of Tokyo experienced a deepening social desensitization. To capture the realities and anxieties of the 1990s, Anno creates a digital diary that plays out like a coming-of-age experience recorded with a surveillance camera attached to a human body.
