About the event
Every year at the Five Flavours we cannot miss a good selection of Independent Japanese Cinema. We talk about the themes it tackles today, the dilemmas faced by the position of an independent auteur in Japan and filmmakers who are still looking for new ways to create cinema.
The studio's guest is Shunji Iwai, one of the most interesting filmmakers in Japanese cinema today, who has been captivating and surprising audiences for over two decades with his harmonious blend of pop culture and lyrical aura.
Shunji Iwai
Born in 1963, graduate of Yokohama National University. The audiences' favorite and one of the most influential filmmakers of his generation, renowned for his unique visual style and avant-garde narration. Apart from directing, he is also a producer, actor and screenwriter. He wrote a novel, composed music for several of his films. Together with his band Ikire, he recorded three songs for "The 12 Day Tale."
