Little Cheung

Film description

Every day 9-year-old Cheung cruises the crowded streets of Mongkoku delivering orders from his parents’ restaurant. The boy is both the protagonist and the narrator of the film – thanks to him we can discover and begin to understand the logic of this noisy place governed by its own rules. Cheung is known by lots of people – the local community full of immigrants sticks together. One day the boy meets Fan, a Chinese illegally staying in Hong Kong, and takes her under his wing. Since then they roam together around the city vibrating with its chaotic pulse – they work, play tricks on disliked clients but also try to find Cheung’s older brother, now a gangster. He was cast out by his father when he went astray.

Taking into account the pessimism of Fruit Chan’s previous films, "Little Cheung" is a surprising closure to the ‘handover trilogy’. Nostalgia and light humour prevailing in the film make it a warm story about growing up in the multicultural Hong Kong, where the tradition still holds on tight against the gusts of the wind of change.
