Film description
Yu returns to his home island of Hainan after spending ten years behind bars. He is planning to get back together with his former partner, a beautiful hairdresser who works hard to support her and her daughter. Will they be able to forget about the past and rekindle the flame of their old love after so many years apart? Can they build a happy home in one of the hundreds of concrete skyscrapers towering over the island's lush greenery?
In the eye of the camera, a place associated with mass tourism and raging developers looks like the time-frozen remains of the apocalypse. "Absence" registers the process of decay in the space surrounding the protagonists in an expressive visual style, revealing the sensitivity and unique talent of the director whose debut assured his place among the top Chinese arthouse filmmakers. The film stars Lee Kang-sheng, known mostly from films by Tai Ming-liang, and Meng Li – an actress at the brink of a spectacular career who enchanted the Chinese audiences with her role in the hit series "The Bad Kids."
The screening will be accompanied by a screening of "Short Story" - the director's 2023 short film.
