Film description

An older man, Vavachan Mestrhiri, dies in the coastal village of Chellanam in the south of India. The matter of his burial ignites a conflict within the small community. In just two evenings, it will move through the picturesque village like a hurricane, shaking it to the core and bringing out the worst in its people.

"R.I.P." marks a fundamental change in Pellissery's style. Previously he was know in Kerala mostly for his romantic comedies. In "R.I.P." he leaves generic schemes behind and comes up with a unique, personal language. For the first time, the director composes the stunning images of chaos, featuring dozens of people. The mastery of the scenes is particularly impressive since most of the actors on set are just regular Chellanam inhabitants. Surrealist and hypnotic, the film is the first part of an informal trilogy followed by "Jallikattu" and "Churuli" (both were shown at Five Flavours) and is still consideredto be the director's masterpiece.

Lijo Jose Pellissery

Born in Kerala in 1979. Considered to be one of the leading filmmakers of Mollywood – Malayalam-language cinema. He debuted in 2010 with the crime film "Nayakan." Since then, he was developing his individual style that includes polyphonic group scenes, aesthetization of violence, and the original, experimental narration.
