A brand-new visual identity of the Five Flavours!
For the past 12 years, Five Flavours was represented by the characteristic, colorful animals of the lunar calendar, beloved by our audiences. Today, we are happy to present the revamped visual identity of the Festival that will accompany the event from this year onward! We also present key dates of this year’s edition.
The author of the visual identity remains unchanged – the one and only Przemek Ostaszewski of the Pan Przemysław studio who has been in charge of the Festival visuals for over a decade. What were the reasons for making the change? Here is what the artists has to say:
Together with the Five Flavours team, we decided to launch the Festival visual identity into a new stylistic era. The journey into the unknown was challenging, especially after so many years of developing the cohesive concept that has really grown on us. It’s not easy to just shake off such deep-rooted sentiment. That’s why, despite the significant changes, we decided to keep some of its elements.
The animals of the Chinese Zodiac remain at the heart of the visual identity, but this time I proposed presenting them within a defined space, creating a cohesive landscape packed with meanings. The leitmotif of the 19th Five Flavours is a snake emerging from turbulent waves, with the Tokyo skyline looming in the distance. The night sky is closed by a constellation of drones which, on the one hand, add an almost SF atmosphere to it, but also introduce a myriad of current political and ethical contexts, reminding us of the dire situation of citizens of countries with authoritarian rulers and those headed towards autocracy, and commenting on control and migration politics.
The motif of turbulent waves symbolizes movement and upcoming changes, fuels the atmosphere of anxiety. Despite the many meanings I put into the illustration, the composition is simple enough to look like a 1980s Japanese stamp. This is no coincidence – nothing in this project is.
What is the snake like? It is roused and focused. Does it see a threat somewhere behind us? Or are we the threat? Whatever the danger, I think the snake can take it on.

The Year of the Wood Snake
Despite the big changes, the animals of the Chinese Zodiac remain at the heart of our visual identity. Thus, the patron of the 19th Five Flavours is the Wood Snake. In the Zodiac calendar, 2025 is a special year – the Wood Snake is bound to bring about many new opportunities. It is a promise of personal growth and wise decisions. Snakes are considered as patrons of good harvest, procreation, smart spirituality, and happiness, but they also have a dark side – they like to connive and spread fear.
A snake losing its skin heralds a new beginning and new energy – fingers crossed!
