About the event

The scariest event of the year is back! On 31st October, join us for the Asian Horror Night

After a few frightfully long years of absence, Five Flavours horror returns to Kino Muranów! From a Korean slasher that will either kill you with fear or slaughter you with laughter, to a Japanese invasion horror from the 1980s, and a chilling miniature from the hand of a master – it’s going to be an unforgettable night.
This year, we’re serving a Korean-Japanese mix guaranteed to satisfy even the most demanding horror enthusiasts, while perfectly tying into the theme of this year’s Five Flavours programme. “Handsome Guys” offers a bloody and delightfully twisted look at Korea’s young generation; “Door” is one of the most important Japanese horrors of the 1980s - long unavailable and finally back on screen; while “Chime” makes a perfect companion piece to another Kurosawa film – “Cloud”, presented in the Asian Cinemara section.

And between the screenings, to soothe your terrified stomachs, you’ll be treated to a warm bowl of food from Yatta Ramen!

Spend the evening with us! Because it’s always better to be scared in good company.

Handsome Guys

Haenseom gaijeu

dir. Nam Dong-hyup, South Korea, 2024, 101’

Warning, spoiler – the title is ironic, because Jae-pil and Sang-goo are anything but handsome. When they move into their dream house in the middle of nowhere, they immediately attract the attention of the local police. And when they happen to rescue Mi-na, who’s drowning in a nearby lake, they find themselves caught up in a situation that spirals rapidly and completely out of their control. Their new home soon fills with uninvited guests, some of them straight from hell, and the blood begins to flow freely…
At a time when Korean cinema is going through a crisis, it’s rare to find a truly good mainstream genre film. “Handsome Guys” comes to the rescue, offering a perfect mix of humour, violence, and horror.

Chime

dir. Kiyoshi Kurosawa

Japan, 2024, 45'

Takuji Matsuoka leads a normal, fulfilling life. He has a family, teaches exclusive cooking classes, and is soon to have a chance to become head chef at a prestigious restaurant. A series of disturbing incidents during his lessons and a persistent sound he begins to hear, however, will cause his life to change drastically…
Evoking the atmosphere of the director’s greatest works, ”Chime” reminds us that a good horror is not about special effects, but about an idea and a precise command of cinematic language. In Kurosawa’s film, the threat lurks in the monotony of everyday life, enclosing and relentlessly crushing. Using the cool frames and soundscapes of the big city, the director subtly but consistently builds a world gradually permeated by icy fear and growing paranoia.
This screening will send shivers down your spine and remind everyone who the true king of world horror is.

Door

Doa

dir. Banmei Takahashi, Japan, 1988, 94’

Mrs Honda lives in an affluent district of Tokyo with her husband and young son. The family enjoys a beautiful apartment with an equally stunning view of the city skyline. She looks after the home and the child, while her husband provides for their comfortable life, an old-fashioned yet fairly common arrangement in Japan of the 1980s. At first, everyone seems content in this routine. That is, until the woman’s frustrations begin to surface and a persistent door-to-door salesman rings the bell, drawing her into open conflict.
Door is a brilliant time capsule of its era and one of the most important horror films in the history of Japanese cinema. Long considered lost, it now returns in a restored version. Today, it feels even more disturbing and charged with perversion than ever before.

The Asian Horror Night is held in partnership with Yatta Vegan Ramen Żoliborz.
