Film description

After years spent in the United States, Ye-geon returns to Korea. Steeped in the American way of life and brimming with infectious energy, he moves in with his old friend Il-rok, who works at a small factory and grows more frustrated with his life by the day. A casually thrown-out idea to enter a men’s vocal quartet competition soon becomes an obsession. Since a quartet requires four members, they recruit Dae-young, a fish shop owner who always wears the same suit but dreams of a bright future, and Joon-se, Dae-young’s friend, who sells doughnuts with his stern wife.

The men begin their “rehearsals”, which mostly consist of eating instant ramen, drinking large amounts of soju, and discussing their life problems. Can such different personalities come together, or will fate derail their artistic plans? The road to musical success is bumpy, and the protagonists are far from perfect. Yet the director never loses patience with them, allowing them to chase their dreams while playfully subverting the conventions of films about aspiring artists. “Delta Boys” is a genuinely funny comedy that is, at the same time, deeply melancholic. With his award-winning debut at the Jeonju International Film Festival, Ko Bong-soo proved himself to be a filmmaker cut from the same cloth as Jim Jarmusch and Aki Kaurismäki.

Ko Bong-soo

Ko Bong-soo made his debut with “Delta Boys”, which won the Grand Prize at the Jeonju International Film Festival, where his films have since been regularly shown. Known as the “king of comedy” on Korea’s independent film scene, he tirelessly pursues his unique cinematic vision with a close-knit group of regular collaborators. His films often tackle social injustice ironically and humorously, portraying characters pushed to the margins of society.
