Film description

Drag queen Jia Hao returns home after years of estrangement for his father’s funeral, a man who had physically abused both him and his mother. Soon after, his mother begins to show signs of rapidly progressing dementia, prompting Jia Hao to stay and care for her. One day, when she forgets who he is and panics, Jia Hao calms her by pretending to be her long-lost daughter. This act of make-believe opens a path toward rebuilding their fractured relationship. Yet behind his identity lies a much more complex story. The mother’s illness becomes a catalyst for change, forcing Jia Hao to confront his past.

"A Good Child" is adapted from the autobiography of Christopher Lim, better known by his drag persona Sammi Zhen, a full-time drag queen in Singapore. Director Ong Kuo Sin first met Lim while working on the 2020 musical comedy "Number 1", set within Singapore’s drag subculture. "A Good Child" features a remarkable performance by Hong Huifang, known for her lead role in "Ajoomma" (2022, dir. He Shuming), shown at Five Flavours in 2023. She is joined by popular young actor Richie Koh as Jia Hao.
