Film description
12th-century China, the reign of the Sung dynasty. Hours before the meeting of prime minister Qin Hui and a representative from the Jin delegation, the diplomat is assassinated. On top of that, a letter addressed to the Prime Minister goes missing. Qin Hui orders his army commander to find the murderer and precious letter. Thus begins a fretful search of the narrow stone streets and a series of confrontations with various individuals involved in the intrigue. Time is running out.
The latest film by Zhang Yimou, the master of Chinese cinema, stuns and surprises with its pace and freshness. The director has long felt at home making period cinema, but here he finds a new formula for the complex, fascinating tale of political betrayal. The rhythm of the film is set by humorous dialogues and the steps echoing through the urban labyrinth, accompanied by a scarce soundtrack. The result is a film in which the comedy is slowly replaced by the seriousness of the cause the protagonists support. It is rare that a smash hit that has already brought in hundreds of millions of dollars appears in Five Flavours' program, but "Full River Red" fully deserves it – this intimate blockbuster is one of the best films of the year.

Zhang Yimou
Member of the Fifth Generation of Chinese filmmakers, one of the country's most recognized authors. He began his career in 1987. His first films, focusing on the people from the Chinese province, quickly brought him an international fame. Later on Zhang focused on big-budget production, often surprising with the scale of his vision. "Hero," "House of Flying Daggers," or "The Great Wall" were being watched all over the world. A few years ago, the director's problems with censorship caused quite a stir – his film "One Second" was pulled out of the Berlinale IFF. Nevertheless, Zhang is still a very busy artist.
