17th Five Flavours Asian Film Festival

New Asian Cinema

Glorious Ashes, dir. Bui Thac Chuyên

New Asian Cinema is Five Flavours' competition section, well known to our audiences. Eleven films, made by talented filmmakers at the onset of their careers, come together forming a colorful, telling panorama of Asian cinema.

Eleven films, made by talented filmmakers at the onset of their careers, come together forming a colorful, telling panorama of Asian cinema.

Working on the competition section is always a challenge that comes with a strong sense of responsibility. How can we show the themes resonating throughout the cinemas of the continent and capture its heartbeat with just eleven films?

Productions from countries such as South Korea, Japan, Singapore, China, and Vietnam capture the pulse of the changes each of the countries is undergoing, shed light on social issues, and encourage long debates – including those with filmmakers visiting Poland. It is also a transsectional look at the contemporary interests of Asian artists – from enigmatic slow cinema, through disturbing thrillers about class stratification, to sharp dramas set in a particular cultural context. The International People's Jury will choose the winner of the Festival from among the titles of this section.

This year, five makers of competition films will come to to Warsaw to meet with the audience – Chihiro Ito ("Side By Side"), Lim Oh-jeong ("Hail To Hell"), Lee Jeong-hong ("A Wild Roomer"), Makbul Mubarak ("Autobiography"), and Jin Ong ("Abang Adik").
