5. Five Flavours Film Festival

The 5th edition of Five Flavours Film Festival was held in Warsaw, from 19th to 26th October, 2011.

The Green Smiling Face of the fifth edition perfectly corresponded with the further growth of Five Flavours. The festival brought Taiwanese cinematography to Poland at the time when it was virtually unknown to the local audiences. The fifth edition opened with the heart-warming "Taipei Exchanges" by Hsiao Ya-chuan, and the Focus: Taiwan section involved a retrospective of masterpieces by Hou Hsiao-hsien and other great masters of the Taiwanese New Wave – Edward Yang, Tsai Ming-liang, and Ang Lee.

The audience could once again immerse themselves in the Taste of Korea with a unique flavour of Hong Sang-soo's features, shorts by Korean film students of the Łódź Film School, and "Bleak Night" by Yoon Sung-hyun presented as the closing film. The Korean programme was completed by Korean Horror Night, with "I Saw the Devil" and "A Tale of Two Sisters" by Kim Jee-woon, and "The Night Fishing" directed by the creative duo PARKing CHANce.

2011 was the first year to involve Japanese cinema. They were not only extreme films from Sushi Typhoon label mentored by Takashi Miike, and "13 Assassins" from the master himself, but also the subtle drama "Norwegian Wood" by Tran Anh Hung, his first non-Vietnamese feature based on the novel by Haruki Murakami.
The fifth edition continued the New Asian Cinema section, with Polish premieres of the latest independent productions from the Far East, a fascinating, last interview with the late Tiziano Terzani recorded in "Anam. The One with No Name," and a portrait of an Israeli expat living in Cambodia in "Phnom Penh Lullaby," the first full-length documentary by the Polish filmmaker, Paweł Kloc.

Last but not least, it started a series of catalogues illustrated by a Polish visual artist, Dorota Podlaska.
