Film description

A cult director and a Five Flavours favorite returns with a film that harks back to his craziest, most belligerent and anarchistic projects. This time, we are thrown onto a film set – a casting for a new production of a Great Filmmaker attracts dozens of young women in love with his film, but the author himself is having troubles finishing the script, and the whole shot quickly begins to get out of hand.

The joyfully chaotic plot is a satire on the Japanese film industry and the absurd reality of show business, slowly taken over by silent heroes, rarely mentioned in the end credits. When the extras take over, cinema returns to the basics – the honest passion and unfettered joy of creation.

The project, created as part of acting workshops led by the director, provides space for all its participants. Even though Sono is famous mostly for his cult, epic narrations, bravely combining the bustling pop culture with a psychoanalytic twist and dark analyses of social ill, this cinema is rooted in the student "jishu eiga" films – DIY productions made on a shoestring budget, with the help of friends. His award-winning pictures from the 1980s and 1990s were filled with surprisingly mature, avant-garde experiments, intertwined with expressive scenes of running through streets and a chaotic rush against social expectations. This is the atmosphere he, half-jokingly, refers to in the "Red Post on Escher Street," without sparing contemporary Japan, in which certain rigid structures still require an intervention of a band of screaming teenagers.

Sion Sono

Born in 1961, poet, performer, filmmaker, painter and musician. One of the most influential artists of the independent Japanese cinema, his films are regularly presented at international festivals. Valued for his radical artistic vision and the ability to combine a shocking form with apt social criticism and an uncompromising film language. He made over 50 movies – from punk experimental cinema to surreal thrillers and daring teenage films. His retrospective was a part of the program of the 10th Five Flavours
