Film description
Yoriko's life seems to be very well-organized. Her days are filled with meeting the members of a religious sect, praying at her home altar, and grooming the Zen stone garden which replaced the flowerbeds her husband cared for before he disappeared from her life without a word. His sudden return disrupts the routine and the skin-deep harmony of Yoriko's existence, cutting through it like ripples troubling a calm surface of water.
The new film by the Five Flavours favorite, Naoko Ogigami, is a treatise about finding the connection with the surrounding world. The director creates a comedy drama full of subversive humor, filled with both old resentments and piercing observations on the not-so-sugar-sweet reality. In "Ripples" Ogigami once again portraits an outcast heroine conflicted with her surroundings, who still manages to enchant us with her uniqueness. At the same time, the film opens a new chapter in the director's career, whose works are enriched with in-depth psychological reflection and ruthless irony – her outlook on relationships has never been this bitter.
