Film description

On the outskirts of the town of Hope, in the Demilitarized Zone, a mysterious incident occurs: a mutilated cow is discovered. A police officer follows the trail into town, while a group of hunters searches for clues in the nearby forest. When they uncover the cause of the commotion, they come face to face with something they cannot explain.

Hope is the most expensive film in the history of Korean cinema, a film for which Na Hong-jin’s fans have had to wait a whole decade. A brutal, large-scale spectacle, it bears all the hallmarks of Na's signature auteur cinema – the pursuit of evil, a deep grounding in local context, and an atmosphere of collective paranoia present in every frame. Playing with the conventions of the monster movie, the Korean director combines them with his characteristic fascination with escalating chaos. The result is a breathtakingly fast-paced film pulsating with rage and setting records for the sheer number of swear words, while perfectly capturing the fiery energy of the Fire Horse that lends its spirit to this year’s Five Flavours festival.

Na Hong-jin

Born in 1974, the South Korean director and screenwriter made his feature debut in 2008 with the thriller The Chaser, which became a box-office hit in South Korea and gained international acclaim for its bold vision and masterful direction. His second film, The Yellow Sea, co-produced by 20th Century Fox, was screened in the Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes Film Festival in 2011. Audiences had to wait six years for his next effort: the horror feature The Wailing, funded by Fox International Productions, which also premiered at Cannes and remains the biggest box-office triumph of his career to date. His latest project, Hope, laden with groundbreaking special effects, stands as the most expensive film production in South Korean cinematic history.
