Film description

A monk, his lover, a shaman, and a hitman. When the monk suddenly disappears, a series of strange events unfolds in the Japanese countryside. At his lover’s request, the hitman sets out to track down the shaman – but can magic protect him from bullets? The characters move through a terrain where the boundaries between the real and the fantastic blur, where the shaman’s whispers intertwine with the cosmology of faith, and ancient rituals merge with the numbers of modern algorithms.

Known for his experimental approach and punk energy, Toshiaki Toyoda creates a cinematic kaleidoscope that fuses genres and styles, multiplying the dimensions of reality surrounding his characters. This is cinema as a sensory experience – immersed in images and sound that shatter narrative conventions and invite the viewer on a trance-like journey beyond the limits of perception. When faith and technology begin to share the same pulse, the director poses a crucial question about modern spirituality: what place will it hold in a world dominated by AI? Infused with Shabaka Hutchings’ electrifying music and Toyoda’s signature creative fury, Transcending Dimensions unfolds as an artistically accomplished, ambiguous, and stylish impression.

Toshiaki Toyoda

A truly defiant filmmaker and the leading punk of Japanese independent cinema, the creator of Blue Spring, a seminal coming-of-age film that captured the zeitgeist of early 2000s Japan. Raised in Osaka, he was a master of shogi (Japanese chess) before turning to cinema. As a teenager, he abandoned the board for the big screen – moving to Tokyo with only a handful of yen in his pocket and a guitar under his arm, where he immediately began working on film sets and writing screenplays. For years, he has remained staunchly independent, with his recent works offering sharp critiques of contemporary Japanese society. Transcending Dimensions, a punk-spirited odyssey, stands as one of Toyoda’s most formally daring experiments.
