Film description
An apparition of a woman in a pink outfit lies at the heart of a new urban legend: if you do not return her love, you can be sure that her kiss will be your last. This is how Yuriyan Retriever, a Japanese stand-up comedian making her feature directorial debut, plays with romantic themes in horror, confining this bloody tale of revenge within the walls of a school.
Beneath the surface of this genre-bending game, however, lies a deeply personal motivation: revenge for unrequited love, which in Retriever’s vision takes the form of a kiss of death – one you will remember for a long time. Produced by an extraordinary lineup including Hirokazu Kore-eda, Takashi Miike, and Shunji Iwai, this debut turns familiar high-school romance tropes inside out, transforming a sentimental story of first love into a surreal revenge horror that delights in subverting audience expectations. There is horror, absurdity, and a ruthless satisfaction in meting out justice to those who break hearts. Because while school romances usually end with a declaration of love, the ones in Mag Mag end much worse. Smooch, smooch!
