Film description
Grey suburbs and the daily grind – nothing much ever happens here. Yong-gi, Ji-sook, and Dum-bo are three school misfits just trying to get by in a world where adults are barely present and scrolling on your phone is the easiest escape from boredom. But when new pupil Woo-joo – a handsome judoka on the national team with thousands of Instagram followers – joins the class, the group's dynamic is completely thrown off course. Long-buried tensions surface, sparking jealousy and a longing for revenge.
South Korea has produced a raft of impressive coming-of-age films recently, but Han Chang-lok’s stylish Funky Freaky Freaks clearly stands out – a feat recognised by the Special Jury Prize at the Busan International Film Festival. Visually bold, combining handheld camera work with animated sequences, the film is further elevated by an atmospheric soundtrack driven by thumping beats. Funky Freaky Freaks offers an honest, sensitive look at a digital world where a single targeted post can tear someone’s life apart.
