Film description

When Hou Yi, a legendary sun archer who set out to save the fading sun, vanishes during his quest, the fairy Chang Er embarks on a journey to find her beloved. Dying of longing, she is prepared to reach the far side of the moon to rescue him. Accompanying her is an earthly astronaut whose unexpected presence injects a touch of the absurd into the narrative. Inspired by Chinese mythology, The House on the Moon is a cosmic fairy tale of sci-fi proportions that draws on the classic aesthetics of stories about grand passion, fate, and matters beyond human comprehension.

Nelson Yeo demonstrates a penchant for genre eclecticism, a post-apocalyptic atmosphere, and nostalgia for 1990s Hong Kong cinema. Melancholy sits alongside nonsense, grandiosity with comedic touches, and romanticism with the raw grain of VHS imagery. It is a cinema both archaic and futuristic – as though an ancient Chinese legend had been rediscovered in a distant galaxy. The latest feature from Nelson Yeo – director of the unpredictable adult fairy tale Dreaming & Dying (featured in the 17th Five Flavours Asian Film Festival programme) – premiered in the main competition at the Locarno Film Festival.
