Film description

Alan and Wolf are both deaf, but they cope with it in very different ways. When sign language was banned at their primary school, Alan complied, while Wolf rebelled. Years later, Alan has a cochlear implant and communicates easily with those around him, while Wolf proudly continues to use sign language. When they meet Sophie, everything between them begins to change. Influenced by their emotions, they are forced to re-evaluate their life priorities.

The final part of Adam Wong’s Hong Kong trilogy was made with the participation of deaf actors. With empathy, yet without unnecessary sentimentality, the director observes his protagonists as they fight for a dignified place in a society that still overlooks their struggles. At the same time, he masterfully uses the film’s sound design to reflect what Alan and Wolf hear. "The Way We Talk" is a triumph of humanistic cinema and a testament to the Hong Kong filmmakers’ mastery of intimate, deeply human stories.

Adam Wong

Director, actor and lecturer, a graduate of the Department of Fine Arts at the Chinese University of Hong Kong. For "The Way We Dance" (2013), he received the Best New Director award at the Hong Kong Film Awards and the Hong Kong Film Directors’ Awards. He decided not to make a sequel immediately after the film’s success, joking that instead of making "The Way We Dance 2", he would skip straight to part three once his characters had grown older. He also declined several high-budget offers, choosing instead to remain faithful to small-scale, independent filmmaking.
