Film description
The sensitive, talented Yuni has not yet chosen her path in life, but it seems that, at the age of 16, she still has plenty of time to figure it out. She is finishing high school, learning comes to her easily, and she has a chance for a scholarship that could allow her to go to college. But her dreams and desires clash with the reality of religious norms and social prejudices that still permeate the Banteng province. Because she is a girl, others want to make decisions about her life and choose her future husband. The choice Yuni is faced with is the toughest and the most important one she will ever have to make.
Kamila Andini, who grew up in a family of filmmakers, is doubtlessly a rising star of new Indonesian cinema. Her third film, made as an international co-production, dazzles with its visual form and the maturity of its message. On the one hand, it is a poetic tale about a not-quite-mature heroine who is only beginning to discover life in its full complexity. On the other, a bitter diagnosis of a society that deprives young people of control over their own lives.
Yuni is Indonesia’s Oscar candidate for Best International Feature Film.

Kamila Andini
Indonesian director born in 1986, the daughter of director Garin Nugroho. Andini refused to work in her father’s shadow – initially, she focused on photography, and then left for Australia to study sociology. After returning to Indonesia, she started directing music videos and documentary films. Her feature debut, which premiered in 2011, was over two years in the making. Set among the Bajau, The Mirror Never Lies was shown at a number of festivals worldwide and was praised by the critics.
