Film description
Life, death, dreams – these are the three words Park Kang relied on while writing the script for his debut, in which he immerses himself in the world of fears and beliefs, still very powerful in South Korea. The inspiration for this story was a real event in his life – at a funeral he attended, he learned that a woman he knew didn’t come because she just had a baby.
In Seire, Hae-mi and Woo-jin have their first baby. The woman and her mother believe that a newborn has to be protected from the evils of the world for the first three weeks. The man learns about the death of his old sweetheart and, despite his wife’s warnings, is determined to attend the funeral. He begins to have nightmares that start merging with reality, and the baby comes down with a mysterious disease. Can breaking the taboo put the family in danger?
Enclosed in beautiful frames, the dark Seire is a surprising debut led with a steady hand, enchanting with the cohesiveness of its artistic vision. It is a mix of a full-blooded horror that slowly creeps under your skin, and a mature psychological portrait of young people facing new challenges.
