Film description
The common denominator of three hypnotic stories slowly intertwining in Memoryland is death and the way it permeates the world of the living. The director shows the conflict of old, local beliefs with the cold pragmatism, ever more present in the rapidly modernizing Vietnam. What are our duties to those that passed away? Are their burial wishes still important if they are not with us anymore? Are traditions bound to die as more and more people migrate to the cities?
Kim Quy Bui created this incredibly personal, yet universal and symbolic film in long, picturesque takes. She wrote the script, inspired by the passing of her father, thinking about the village where she grew up. She shot the film in a similar place, inhabited by only a handful of people. The villagers and their old, cracked houses appear in front of the camera, lending a documentary power to this beautiful, contemplative story.
