Radio Asia Festival, 17-21 XII 2017

Shapla Salique

Concerts, workshops, radio dramas and an Asian jam-session. This year marks the third season of Radio Asia – concerts devoted to niche Asian music. The event will take the form of a five-day festival held on December 17-21.

Like every year, we present unique artists, who never cease to explore and experiment, merging the traditional and the local with their personal, modern music vision.

The Festival is comprised of five concerts by Asian artists, day-long music workshops, a radio drama devoted to the most interesting phenomena combining the traditional and contemporary scene of the Far East, and an Asian jam-session – an improvised concert, in which everyone can perform along the festival musicians.

The guests of Radio Asia include:

17 XII: TARO YASUNO (Japan)

Music constructor, creator of the "Zombie Music" project. He conveys his modern, minimalist compositions through self-built installations, drawing out the sounds of wind instruments with synthetic fingers, air compressors and computer steering.

18 XII: SENYAWA (Indonesia)

An avant-garde duet from Yogyakarta uses the richness of traditional, native Indonesian sounds and hand-made "garage" instruments. Senyawa combines rough, primitive sounds with ecstatic vocal experiments, creating a new quality, essentially a musical minimalism.

19 XII: KANDE (Indonesia)

Kande is a band of eight, whose passion and stage energy leaves no one unmoved. Three guitars, five traditional drums, and the unbridled vocals, create an explosive, danceworthy mixture of Indonesian folklore, sufi mysticism, rock zest, and jazz improvisations.

20 XII: Mouth & Hand Studio (South Korea)

Mouth & Hand Studio is a five-person band from Seoul, whose leader, Lee Sueng-hee, known from the Be-Being project, is a pansori vocalist. The art of pansori is a traditional one-voice opera. All the roles are played by one singer, who tells stories, performs dialogues, makes onomatopoeic sounds, but most importantly sings the songs. For Mouth & Hand Studio, the art of pansori is a starting point leading to further exploration of contemporary music.

21 XII: Shapla salique (Bangladesh)

The artist employs traditional Bengali music to create its most refined combinations with jazz and soul vibrations, introducing the new generations of audiences to the somehow forgotten local folklore. Her work is rooted in the songs of Bauls, nomadic mystics, god's madcaps, performing extremely emotional pieces, expressing spiritual fulfillment and mystical experiences.
