18th Five Flavours sections:
  • New Asian Cinema - The festival's permanent competition section serves as a barometer of shifts and moods across Asian countries. It features ten films that form a vibrant and distinctive panorama of Asian cinema, created by filmmakers who are not yet widely recognised internationally. The winner of the 18th Five Flavours will be selected by an International People's Jury, made up of nine passionate Asian cinema enthusiasts travelling to Warsaw from all over Europe;
  • Asian Cinerama - compelling, high-budget blockbusters, new films by authors already well-established in the world of cinema and discoveries that unexpectedly won the hearts of audiences in Asia;
  • Portrait: Stanley Kwan - the first retrospective in Poland of a filmmaker associated with the Hong Kong New Wave, who has consistently followed his own path, disregarding mainstream trends. Since his debut, Kwan has focused primarily on human relationships and complex female characters, exploring their stories against the backdrop of history. He tells these narratives through stylistically diverse films, which adds to the intrigue of his work. At Five Flavours, audiences will have the opportunity to see five of his finest films, along with two others produced by him.
  • Tokyo Stories - eight films provide a cross-sectional portrait of the world’s largest metropolis. The section concludes with a multi-genre exploration of the vast city, spanning the last six decades of Tokyo's history. Renowned filmmakers serve as guides through this landscape, their discerning eyes revealing the city’s nuanced identity, marked by the biographies of its inhabitants and local contexts.
  • Focus: Environment - the selection of seven films, which engage in dialogue despite their differing genres and styles, creates a portrait of humanity's relationship with nature amidst the pressing challenges of the modern world. Viewers will encounter both slow, meditative visuals and high-budget monster movies featuring innovative special effects.
  • Restored Classics - A unique gift for cinephile audiences and lovers of classic cinema. This collection features great titles and masterpieces cherished by Asian audiences that are essential to any discussion of both independent and commercial contemporary cinema, all presented in digitally restored copies.

Festval’s Guests

This year, Five Flavours will once again welcome many eminent guests from Asia. Joining us in Warsaw will be Shiika Okada ("Kisspeptin Chronicles"), Hiroshi Ishikawa ("tokyo.sora"), Chia Chee Sum ("Oasis of Now"), Qu Youjia ("Sat Like All Ordinary Once"), Sasha Chuk ("Fly Me to the Moon"), and Peng Tzu-hui and Wang Ping-wen ("A Journey in Spring"). The post-screening meetings will provide an opportunity to ask about the making of their films, as well as their personal and social contexts. But that's not all – additional conversations with those creators who are unable to attend in person will be available on piecsmakow.pl, and access to them will be open to all.

Introductions, podcasts and Asian Academy

At Five Flavours, we are always eager to enrich the screenings with contextualised material that helps viewers understand the cultural or social frameworks behind the films. That’s why each screening will be accompanied by a short, spoiler-free introduction by one of the Five Flavours selectors.

We will also be providing our audiences with a festival magazine, which will include the screening schedule and three essays introducing the festival’s various sections. The publication will be available in both print and digital formats.

Audiences will also have the chance to listen to a series of podcasts featuring in-depth conversations about the films and the themes they explore. This will include episodes of the Five Flavours Podcast, recorded by festival selectors, as well as broadcasts from our media partners and collaborating editors.

This year also marks the return of the Asian Academy! This series of events is dedicated to promoting knowledge of Asian cinema through special programmes — debates, discussions, and cross-cutting talks that delve deeper into the themes presented in the films. These events will feature invited experts and enthusiasts of Asian cultures, offering a unique opportunity to go beyond the films themselves. Admission to all Asian Academy events is free!

Tokyo Pop

Festival Club

This year, for the second time, we warmly invite you to our Festival Club at Amondo Club (specially expanded for the occasion), where a dedicated menu and a variety of activities await. Join us for good music and conversations about... Asian cinema. And of course, we’ll be there too!
