The festival is the first in Poland to screen films labeled with the Sushi Typhoon logo. The programme includes "Coldfish" (Tsumetai nettaigyo) directed by Shion Sono and "Karate Robo Zaborgar" (Denjin Zabôgâ: Gekijô-ban) by Noboru Iguchi.
Born in 2010, the Sushi Typhoon is the upstart, wild offspring of a respectable parent: Nikkatsu Corporation, the oldest film studio in Japan and once home to legendary 1960′s action stars like Joe Shishido, Akira Kobayashi, Tetsuya Watari, Meiko Kaji and Yujiro Ishihara. With a long history of genre films and violent gangster epics, the company was also the leader of Japan’s erotic renaissance of the 1970′s with their Roman Porno line; and now, Nikkatsu’s latest offering, the Sushi Typhoon, takes their century-old extremes to the next level.
The brainchild of veteran producer Yoshinori Chiba, responsible for introducing directors Takashi Miike, Noboru Iguchi and Yoshihiro Nishimura to Western audiences, the Sushi Typhoon seeks to satisfy audiences who crave the good taste of bad taste, and for whom too much is never enough.
First productions labelled with the Sushi Typhoon logo were launched at the end of 2010 and in the first half of 2011 and included "Cold Fish" and "Karate-Robo Zabogar". They shift the border and expand the definition of the entertainment and bring a viewer to a different level of cinema full of action, violence, eroticism and horror.
"Cold Fish" by Shion Sono brings a story of Nobuyuki Syamoto, a kind man who runs a small tropical fish shop. He has a new wife but must face troubles at home with his own teen daughter, who does not accept her young step mother. One day, when the teenager is caught shoplifting, Mr. Murata – the owner of a large aquarium centre in town helps her get out of the troubles. Mr. Murata and his eccentric wife become Nobuyuki Syamoto’s new friends. But it soon turns out that they are indeed disgusting psychopaths who trap Nobuyuki Syamoto and his family in a sadistic game.
Shion Sono was born in 1961 in Toyokawa, Japan. Poet, performance artist, award wining filmmaker who is also one of the Sushi Typhoon’s core members. His films and horrors are overloaded with pessimistic atmosphere, people who commit suicide, serial killers, psychopaths. Suicide Club from 2003 brought him to international fame.
Among the postulates stressed by directors from the Sushi Typhoon studio is to create remakes of the films which inspired them to become filmmakers. One of the cult films for Naboru Iguchi was the series with Zaborgar the cyborg. Thanks to his karate skills and specialised weapons the hero fought with mechanic, Godzilla-like monsters who came to destroy the planet. Bringing the cyborg to life once again in his "Karate-Robo Zabogar", Iguchi made a crazy, science-fiction and action film, sparkling with the most wacky characters, dialogues and scenes in the universe. The popular TV-series has become the high-budget B-class film.
Noboru Iguchi was born in 1969 in Tokyo, Japan. As he was fascinated by science-fiction films, he used to skip classes to watch Godzilla. He was a co-funder of Fudoshi Corps art group which produced and distributed independent genre films. Now one of the most acclaimed Japanese directors of science-fiction films.
This year's programme of the Japanese extreme cinema includes also "13 Assasins" by Takashi Miike who also cooperates with the Sushi Typhoon studio. With his film, a remake of Kudo Eiichi's film from 1963, Takashi Miike makes a successful attempt to match up to the granddad of all samurai films, Akira Kurosawa's "Seven Samurai". Set in the feudal Japan, the film tells a story about 13 samurai who – under Shinzaemon Shimada's command – are hired to remove Lord Naritsugu, a powerful and sadistic feudal ruler.
