It's at the end of October when Five Flavours Film Festival brings variety of film flavours from South-East and East Asia for the fifth time.
This year's edition takes a look at Taiwanese cinematography. Apart from new titles, the section Focus: Taiwan includes masterpieces by a renowned director Hou Hsiao-hsien, one of the movers and most important artists of the Taiwanese New Wave. Another section of the fifth edition is Taste of Korea presenting new films from South Korea. As in the previous years, Five Flavours also involves the section New Asian Cinema with the selection of the latest films from Singapore, Thailand, Philippines and other countries of the region.
For the first time Japanese cinema is included in the programme. A spectacular film in the best samurai tradition, "13 Assassins" by a cult director Takashi Miike, is among the titles from Japan, becoming one of the most important Polish premieres at the fifth Five Flavours. With "13 Assassins", a remake of Kudo Eiichi's film from 1963, Takashi Miike makes a successful attempt to match up to the granddad of all samurai films, Akira Kurosawa’s "Seven Samurai". Set in the feudal Japan, the film tells a story about 13 samurai who – under Shinzaemon Shimada's command – are hired to remove Lord Naritsugu, a powerful and sadistic feudal ruler.
Japanese cinema is represented also by the titles from Sushi Typhoon studio: "Cold Fish" by Shion Sono and "Karate Robo-Zaborgar" by Noboru Iguchi. Despite the studio was created only in 2010, it managed to gather the interest of the audience and critics very rapidly. Because of its highly entertaining profile, Sushi Typhoon "seeks to satisfy audiences who crave the good taste of bad taste, and for whom too much is never enough".
Five Flavours Film Festival presents both contemporary and classic films from South-East and East Asia. Screenings are accompanied by discussions with film directors and producers (among whom were Pen-ek Ratanaruang, Ho Tzu Nyen, Chuyen Bui Thac in the previous years) and special events (exhibitions, lectures, concerts) which aim to present wider cultural, social, historic contexts of the region and its countries.
The fifth edition takes place from the 19th to 26th of October in Warsaw in Muranow and KINO.LAB cinemas. The festival later hits the road and visits Krakow (Kino pod Baranami: October, 26-31) and Poznan (Kino Muza: November, 12-15).
