"Taipei Exchanges" directed by Hsiao Ya-chuan is the opening film of this year's Five Flavours Film Festival and is one of the titles included in Focus: Taiwan. The section, apart from the retrospective of the most remarkable works by Hou Hsiao-hsien, presents the selection of titles produced in the recent years in Taiwan as well as older films by masters of the Taiwanese New Wave.
"Taipei Exchanges" (Di 36 ge gu shi, Taiwan 2010, 82 ') brings the story of Doris (Kwai Lun-mei) who abandons her permanent job to realise her dream and together with her little sister Josie (Lin Zaizai) opens a café in Taipei. Focused on her work, almost absent, she prepares a different dessert every day, brews coffee and waits for customers. However her sister Josie first of all tries to bring people to their café.
Daughters – unlike their mother's generation, who for decades had built the Chinese diaspora in Taiwan on a desire to enrich themselves – choose a different path.
Daughter's Café becomes a symbol of their choice: it's something more than just a café. It becomes a place of exchanges – of goods, services, skills, stories, accommodation. A rare book with Japanese songs found on the shelf cannot be bought here. But one can purchase it if has a traditional song to exchange and can perform it for the guests gathered in the cafeteria.

Hsiao Ya-chuan was born in 1967 in Taipei. Initially he was involved in the production of television commercials but later he became an assistant of one of the leading Taiwanese directors, Hou Hsiao-hsien. He worked with Hou on "Flowers of Shanghai" (Hai shang hua, 1998).
His full-length debut was the feature "Mirror Image" (Ming dai zhu zhui, 2001), which was widely presented at international festivals, won him awards at the Vancouver International Film Festival, Thessaloniki International Film Festival and Fukuoka Asian Film Festival.
"Taipei Exchanges" is the first Taiwanese film shot with the hi-tech camera Red One. Both his films were produced by 3H Films which is the production company owned and managed by Hou Hsiao-hsien.
