This year's edition takes a look at Taiwanese cinematography. Focus: Taiwan is divided into three parts: Taiwanese New Wave, New Taiwanese Cinema and the retrospective of Hou Hsiao-hsien's works. The retrospective includes five masterpieces by the renowned director, one of the movers and most important artists of the Taiwanese New Wave, as well as the documentary by Olivier Assayas "Portrait of Hou Hsiao-hsien".
The history of the Taiwanese cinema is intertwined with the turbulent history of the country, which became a Japanese colony in the year when the Lumière brothers invented their cinematograph. Oscillating in the sphere of the influences from mainland China, Japan and America, the island dwellers have been trying to define their cultural identity from the 1980s. The directors of the Taiwanese New Wave, which was the first attempt to bring the art-house cinema to Formosa island, tried to capture the changes in their films.
The attempt proved to be successful, thought brief, covering the period from 1982 to 1987. It was when young directors took the floor: Edward Yang, Hou Hsiao-hsien, Chang Yi, Tao Te-chen, Ko I-chen, Chang Yi, Chen Kun-hou, among others. In their early anthology films, they formed an outline of the new Taiwanese cinema, based on contemporary stories with ordinary people, pictured with long, static shots. For the very first time, the Taiwanese filmmakers brought into the daylight complicated issues of cultural and political identity of the island, including relations with mainland China.
Hou Hsiao-hsien: Retrospective
The programme starts with the most important Hou's film, "A City of Sadness" (1989) which tracks dramatic stories of four Lin brothers during the turbulent White Terror period in Taiwan in the 1940s. With its innovative narrative forms, the family saga becomes also an epic metaphor of the history of Taiwan.
Also innovative when it comes to the narration, "Millennium Mambo" (Qian xi man po, 2000) brings the portrait of young and beautiful Vicky who dreams of the past. Vicky recalls her memories from the times when she dropped out of school to live in a toxic relationship with her possessive boyfriend, Hao-hao. "Flowers of Shanghai" (Hai shang hua, 1998), set in mainland China at the end of the 19th century, seems to be a mirror reflection of "Millennium Mambo". Hou portrays a decadent world of flower houses, where courtesans entertain guests with conversation, serving tea and preparing opium pipes. "Three Times" (Zui hao de shi guang, 2005) is an artistic summary of the Hou's achievements. This anthology film involves three love stories set up in the three distant decades. The main characters are played by the same actor (Chang Chen) and actress (Shu Qi) who create a subtle picture about Taiwan's history and its citizens' life.
In turn, "Café Lumière" (Kōhī Jikō, 2003) is a film homage to Yasujirō Ozu. Hou covers typical Ozu's themes – relationships between children and parents, the role of family, everyday habits and rituals.
A supplement to the retrospective is "Portrait of Hou Hsiao-hsien" which is the documentation of the interviews Olivier Assayas made with Hou Hsiao-hsien in Taiwan in the mid-90's. Hou recalls his childhood, adventurous youth, the conscription which proved to be a decisive event for his later career. He also discuss his artistic choices, the history of Taiwan and Taiwanese cinema.
Besides the films by Hou Hsiao-hsien, the programme of Focus: Taiwan includes masterpieces by other renowned New Wave directors. "What Time Is There?" by Tsai Ming-liang is a tribute to the masters of the French cinema: François Truffaut, Robert Bresson and Jacques Tati. "Eat Drink Man Woman" is an early film from Ang Lee which is screened at Five Flavours as the Polish premiere. It brings a story set in Taipei and portrays Mr Chu and his unmarried daughters who have to face serious changes in their lives. The last New Wave film is "The Terrorisers" by Edward Yang. The director is known for his highly acclaimed "A one and a Two", which was the only Taiwanese film to date that was widely distributed in Poland. "The Terrorisers" is the film suspended between the fantasy and the reality and one of the brightest examples of the Taiwanese New Wave that fuses European minimalism with Asian vitality.
Focus also brings the latest films: four titles produces in the past two years, all of which are screened as Polish premieres.
"7 Days in Heaven" by Liu Zi-jie i Yu-lin Wang is a black comedy capturing seven days of Taoist mourning rituals. Leon Dai's "No puedo vivir sin ti" is a black and white, beautifully shot film based on facts. A single father has to face the bureaucracy when he tries to register her at a local school. Another new title is "Taipei Exchanges" by Hsiao Ya-chuan which is also the opening film of this year's festival. It brings a story of Doris and Josie who open a cosy café in Taipei. It soon becomes an extraordinary place to exchange goods, services, skills, stories.
"Everlasting Moments" by Chen Wen-pin is the last film presented among the productions from the most recent years. The director, who is also the guest of the festival, combines elements of the documentary, feature and ethnographic film. He portrays the Northern Taiwan, inhabited by the Atayal people, one of the largest groups of Taiwanese aborigines. The screening of the film and meeting with the director takes place in the festival club, Poludnik Zero.
